Thorium: Safe Nuclear Energy is being Resurrected

Thorium (the new green nuke) offers several advantages over uranium: 1) up to 200 times more energy per ton; 2) three times more abundant; 3) superior physical and nuclear properties; 4) enhanced proliferation resistance; 5) reduced nuclear waste production. 

Much of the early research in thorium was conducted at Oak Ridge in the 1950's through the early 1970's.  In the 1960's the US government chose to use uranium instead of thorium, partly because uranium could be refined into weapons grade material; thus the course of nuclear energy was set for several decades. Currently Oak Ridge's thorium research data is being publicized by Kirk Sorensen. 

Several thorium related bills have been introduced by US congress including the "Thorium Energy and Independence Act." It has been said that Obama could quickly create energy independence in 3 or 5 years with a "Manhattan" or "Man on the Moon" type of Thorium Energy Project.  The real action though has been in China and India based in part upon technology first developed years ago in the US.
